Constraints on Resultative and Depictive Modification

چکیده
According to Halliday (1967), there is a ban on simultaneous resultative and depictive modification in English. It is here observed that such a ban is not general, but instead restricted to certain examples of modification with abnormal theta relations, which are commonly found in the resultative construction. Otherwise, simultaneous resultative/depictive modification is possible. An account of this asymmetry is given in terms of the theory of complex predicates (Neeleman 1994). Complex predicate formation is necessary just in case the resultative predicate lacks an argument position for its theta role. This situation obtains in resultative constructions with fake reflexives, for example. In such cases, the main verb must license the direct internal argument of the resultative construction through the indirect assignment of the result predicateÕs theta role. For this purpose, the result predicate must be base generated as sister to the main verb. The theta role of a depictive predicate however, must be assigned to the external argument. For this purpose, the depictive predicate must also be base generated as sister to the main verb. Therefore, given that complex predicate formation is necessary, simultaneous depictive/resultative modification is impossible. This account assumes strict binary branching.

Depictives in English: An LTAG Approach
In this paper, we explore different ways to account for the peculiarities of depictive secondary predication in English, which we think can be characterized as longdistance modification. Other than with resultative secondary predication, the depictive and its target, typically the subject or direct object of a verbal phrase, do not form a contiguous constituent. Instead, the depictive attaches ...
متن کاملResultatives: a Joint Operation of Semantic and Syntactic Structures
One of the most challenging aspects of the analysis of resultative constructions in English is the appearance in some cases of what we might call a \nonthematic object," an object that is not a semantic argument of the verb of the clause. This aspect challenges the claim that the grammatical functions of a clause are determined by the lexical properties of the verb of the clause. We need to aba...
متن کاملArguments for Pseudo-Resultative Predicates∗†
This paper addresses the compositionality puzzle presented by a class of ‘pseudo-resultative’ predicates, such as tight in the sentence She braided her hair tight. The analysis proposed reveals that the modification involved also provides insight into the nature of the lexical roots of verbs and their role in compositional semantics. Pseudo-resultative predicates superficially resemble resultat...
متن کاملConstructional Compositionality and the English Resultative
Recent work on grammatical constructions in English (Lakoff 1987, Goldberg 1995, Kay & Fillmore 1999, Fillmore, Kay & O’Connor 1988) has provided strong evidence that the meaning of an utterance is not always derivable from its lexical parts and that the semantics of a sentence is partly comprised of meaning ascribed to syntactic constructions. Lacking in most of these accounts, however, is a d...
متن کاملSyntactic Edges and Linearization
In this thesis, I investigate the question of how the units of a linguistic expression are linearly ordered in syntax. In particular, I examine interactions between locality conditions on movement and the mapping between syntax and phonology. I show that Cyclic Linearization of syntactic structure and constraints on domain-internal movement of multiple specifiers predict unique ordering restric...
